Something my Girls are Not... Yet...

I have three children. One boy and two girls (twins). Right now, til next month at least; they are all three years old. Now, surprisingly, or maybe not, my girls are not girlie girls. And I guess that would be my fault since I was more of a tom-boy growing up, I'm not into tiaras and lace.

So, when I saw this book at the library, I thought it would be a great into for them to get into girlie things... and it was... for all three of them!

Fancy Nancy by Jane O'Connor and Illustrated by Robin Glasser (Ages 4-8)

Story of a little girl who loves to be fancy. She uses fancy words and explains what they are, for example, Posh is another word for Fancy. Here family is not fancy, but she places an ad at Grand Central Refrigerator and her family wants to take classes. As a treat, they go out, all while being fancy. I loved the looks on the other patrons' faces as they walked in the door. It is priceless. You'll have to get the book for yourself. It's a gem.

Oh, and the best part, since my kids loved her in this book, I'm excited to learn that she has other books too!

I Spy a Freight Train

I Spy a Freight Train by Lucy Micklethwait (ages 4-8) While at the library my son spotted this gem and asked if we could bring home. He loves trains, so of course I said yes. We have a large freight train station in town, so it is rare that we not see a train. It's fun to see his excitement when he sees a train, but it hard to also watch him panic as the train keeps going and disappears. I called this a little gem because I didn't realize that the book about more than just freight trains. We got to spy on airplanes, row boats, horses, sleighs, a baby carriage and many more. Not to mention the other 'made up' things we spied while making a game of it. It was fun. Even more so, my children haven't heard the term baby carriage or sleigh, so that was fun to see what they thought was it. Here's another excerpt of the book. A More Economical Way to Acquire and Recycle Books

I love books. I almost think that I’m a book-a-holic because I drool over and snap up books like some women do shoes. Like many, as the economy dives, I’ve had to cut back from my usual book buying haunts in search of cheaper and more economical resources.
